Did you know that pollen is sometimes used for health benefits? In fact, pollen has been identified as a component of medicines that are 2,000 years oldTrusted Source.

One type of pollen often used for health purposes is pine pollen. It’s believed that pine pollen has anti-aging properties, alleviates fatigue, and boosts testosterone.
Benefits and uses

Pine pollen has long been used for a variety of health-related purposes, such as:

  • supplementing the diet or adding to foods
  • slowing aging
  • reducing fatigue
  • boosting testosterone
  • treating a variety of conditions, including colds, constipation, and prostate disease

Nutritional value

Pine pollen has the following nutrients:

There haven’t been studies in humans about the benefits of pine pollen as a dietary supplement.

However, a small study with pigs found that inclusion of pine pollen in their diet increased stool weight and water content. This suggests pine pollen may be a good fiber supplement.

Anti-aging

A 2012 studyTrusted Source investigated the anti-aging effects of pine pollen in cultured human cells and in mice.

Most cells, with the exception of cancer cells, can’t divide indefinitely. They can only divide a limited amount of times. This is called replicative senescence. The researchers found that pine pollen delayed replicative senescence in cultured human cells.

In mice, the researchers found that pine pollen prevented memory errors in a test of neurological activity. They also observed a rise in activity of antioxidant molecules and a decrease in molecules associated with inflammation.

Antioxidant properties

Antioxidants are compounds that can slow or stop damage to your cells done by molecules called free radicals. Since antioxidants may help prevent aging and conditions like cancer, there’s been research into the antioxidant properties of pine pollen.

One studyTrusted Source found that pine pollen extract had comparable antioxidant activity to a control antioxidant compound. The pine pollen extract also had an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing the levels molecules associated with inflammation in stimulated cells in a culture.

A recent studyTrusted Source in cultured cells and with rats found that a carbohydrate derived from pine pollen had antioxidant activity. Additionally, when challenged with a toxic compound, researchers observed that pretreating rats with the pollen-derived carbohydrate decreased both visible liver damage and the levels of enzymes associated with liver damage.

Testosterone

Testosterone has been found in the pollen of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). It’s estimated that 10 grams of this pollen contains 0.8 micrograms of testosterone.

Because of this, pine pollen is often used to boost testosterone levels.

Keep in mind that testosterone is an important hormone that can influence certain body functions. If you’re using pine pollen as a testosterone booster, be careful not to use too much.

Levels of testosterone that are too high can cause the following problems in males:

Pine Pollen Helps women too:

PINE POLLEN BENEFIT #1:

Pine pollen contains over 200 different vitamins, minerals, enzymes, co-enzymes, antioxidants, and amino acids.  Per gram, it is one of the most nutrient dense foods a woman can consume! These micro-nutrients help slow the aging process, prevent disease, and contribute to overall well-being.

Our food chain is filled with polluted and denatured (processed) food that creates an incredible amount of nutritional stress for the body. Modern food contains few substances our body needs and too many things it doesn’t – excess fat, sugar, chemicals, preservatives, etc.

This makes it incredibly important to add superfoods to our diet to fill in the gaps left by low quality food. Many women reach for multivitamins to get these missing nutrients… But they aren’t aware that many of the nutrients in their prenatal or daily multivitamin are synthetic, which makes them difficult for the body to absorb and use.

Pine pollen benefits women by providing them with a natural, bio-available source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants.

Pine Pollen's Nutritional Content Includes:

  • Plant-Based Hormones: Raw pine pollen is traditionally used in Chinese medicine as a healthy aging superfood due to its natural hormone content and various plant sterols.

  • Vitamins and Minerals: Pine pollen also contains a wide array of vitamins and minerals, including but not limited to: Vitamin D3, various B Vitamins, Folic Acid, Inositol, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Zinc, Silica, Copper, Iron, Selenium, and Potassium.

  • Amino Acids: Pine pollen is a complete protein that contains all essential amino acids, plus non-essential amino acids arginine, cysteine, glutamine, glycine, proline, and tyrosine. Amino acids are essential for hormonal health, building lean muscle, and supporting optimal energy levels.

  • Antioxidants and Anti-Inflammatory Compounds: Raw pine pollen also contains many flavonoids, polyphenols, glutathione, resveratrol, Superoxide Dismutase, and more.

Pine Pollen Benefit #2: Improved Mood, Brain Function, and Sex Drive

Pine pollen is a natural source of phenylalanine, which is associated with the production and use of various neurotransmitters in the brain. Phenylalanine stimulates dopamine levels in the brain and is a l-dopa precursor.

Higher levels of l-dopa and phyto-androgens, thanks to pine pollen, can have a direct impact on a women's mood and can even help boost libido.

The amino acids and antioxidants in pine pollen are essential to the creation of stress hormones, proper blood flow, and helping the body to recover and deal with stress.

For example: pine pollen provides women with a natural dose of l-tryptophan which is essential to the creation of serotonin – nature's “feel good” hormone.

Benefit of Pine Pollen #3: Hormone Balance

Hormone imbalance in women can lead to mood swings, weight gain, and even heavy or irregular periods.

The natural hormones in pine pollen help restore balance in a women’s body, which leads to a wide range of benefits.

Just like men, women can become deficient in their T or other hormones or develop excess levels of estrogen for various reasons. Most often this is a result of natural aging, but a poor diet and too many estrogenic foods can also cause imbalance in the body.

Imbalanced hormones can cause a wide range of issues, including:

  • Decreased libido and sex drive

  • Increased rates of depression and other mood problems

  • Changes in body composition (loss of muscle, increased body fat, etc.)

  • Changes in sleep patterns

  • Loss of strength and decreased athletic performance

  • Accelerated signs of aging

Women in menopause can also experience large declines in "T", which can make these issues worse.

Pine pollen contains powerful pro-growth hormones which can supplement a woman's own production to help support optimal levels of these key hormones. The natural hormones are also essential for maintaining lean muscle, a youthful skin tone, and pain-free joints.

These hormones may also help balance hormone ratios, which is key to maximizing health, longevity, and well-being.

Health conditions

One studyTrusted Source looked at pine pollen and how it affected chronic arthritis in mice. Researchers found that treatment with pine pollen extract daily for 49 days lowered arthritis symptoms in the mice. Additionally, molecules associated with inflammation were also reduced.

A 2013 study in cultured liver cancer cells found that a carbohydrate derived from pine pollen could stop the cells during their division cycle. This is intriguing since one of the hallmarks of cancer cells is that they grow and divide in an uncontrolled manner.

Conclusion:

Pine pollen benefits you by providing you  with many nutrients and hormones that can have a positive impact on overall health and physical performance.  If you're looking to upgrade your nutrition from processed foods and synthetic vitamins and supplements, then pine pollen can be a great tool for you.
